While religious institutions spread the word to their flock, the Largo Sentinel offered a weekly pulpit for issues facing the community. The first issue appeared in January 1912, the month that Pinellas County gained its independence. The Sentinel became a supportive voice for the community, especially during the 29 years J. Stanley Pecarek owned the paper. This view shows the early printing office in 1913. (HV.)

As citrus groves increased in size and value, investors enjoyed a variety of business partnerships that supported the industry. Robert Lee “Dr. Bob” McMullen served as secretary for the Pure Fruit Products Company and signed this stock certificate issued to John S. Taylor. A bountiful harvest of citrus with the Hi-Stepper label at Taylor’s packinghouse illustrates the importance of these facilities to the local economy. (Both, John S. Taylor Collection, HV.)
